Hello, we are Team ARIA, a group with various backgrounds to include engineering, policy, and political science Our problem-sponsor is Eyes Up Appalachia, founded by Christi Bartman, whose priority is to illuminate, educate and activate against human trafficking Our original problem statement focused on identifying risk factors to human trafficking that are specific to Appalachia, Ohio. We believed the solution to this was the creation of a heat map that could visually show risk factor densities and locations in order to provide resources to these populations. However, through interviews and discussions with our teaching team we realized our solution was unsustainable in the long term and did not solve the underlying issue. Team Aria went back to the drawing board, where we adapted the problem statement to reflect the new understandings drawn from interviews. While Ohio ranks high nationally in terms of human trafficking cases this number is historically driven by urban populations Human trafficking numbers for Appalachian Ohio are almost non-existent Through interviews and research we identified several underlying vulnerabilities that make an individual more at risk and proposed the creation of an information database that combines these vulnerability statistics to locate the at risk populations. This solution provides our customer, Christi Bartman, a snapshot in time showing specific areas within Appalachian Ohio that require more resources to aid and prevention Christi could then take that information to individuals with the power to allocate resources in order to alleviate some of the pains felt in these communities and prevent individuals from feeling pressure to engage in human trafficking These current and future prevention efforts enabled by the database can lower the amount of human trafficking in the future. Thank you
