Dr. Elizabeth Newton

Dr. Elizabeth K. Newton is Executive Director of the Ohio State University’s Battelle Center for Science, Engineering, and Public Policy in the Glenn College of Public Affairs and an Associate Professor of Practice in the Integrated Systems Engineering Department of the College of Engineering.

Dr. Newton leads the Center to deliver technology innovation in the public interest and to develop students with essential skills for tackling complex problems and thinking strategically. She leverages years’ experience as a business executive and former civil servant to develop and guide strategy, lead business development and strategic planning, forge partnerships, design and develop technology and process, direct strategic communications, and support C-suite, economic development, and government clients. Thanks to her work in high-tech industries like aerospace, defense, genomics, and software, she navigates and bridges the distinct cultures of the for-profit and non-profit private sector, academia, and government.

Dr. Newton is expert in government policy for technology innovation, workforce development, and systems engineering. Recent accomplishments include: guiding a novel energy technology program funded by the Department of Defense and helping win its demonstration phase; developing the policy framework for Ohio in advanced air mobility; delivering hypersonics workforce policy recommendations to the Navy; and designing an academic consortium in geospatial science/technology for a federal intelligence agency.

Dr. Newton is a popular trainer, mentor, and advisor and designed the Rapid Innovation for Public Impact course and interdisciplinary, industry-focused Student Communities of Practice and Engagement (SCOPE) model, which have transformed the way many hundreds of students in dozens of disciplines think about wicked problems, professional challenges, their career pathways, and purpose. Corporations and government agencies seek her out as a trusted partner for bolstering their workforces.

Dr. Newton is a physicist with degrees in government. She earned her bachelor’s degree in government from Cornell University as a Phi Beta Kappa, Cornell National Scholar, and Maryland Distinguished Scholar. She earned a certificate in international relations from l’lnstitut de Hautes Etudes Internationales, in Geneva, Switzerland and interned at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. Her advanced degrees include a Master’s degree in political science from the University of California Berkeley, where she was a Congressional Jacob K. Javits Fellow, and master’s and doctoral degrees in solar astrophysics from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where she was supported by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and NASA.
