Battelle Center at CCUS Latin America 2025
On May 28 and 29, 2025, Battelle Center Director Dan Kelley and Operations Manager Michael Pires traveled to Cartagena, Colombia to take part in CCUS Latin America 2025. The international conference brought together technical experts, industry leaders, and policymakers to explore the future of carbon capture, utilization, and storage.
Dr. Kelley served as a panelist during the event, sharing his perspective on the vital role CCUS plays in balancing energy needs and environmental goals. He said, “Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage is a key collection of practices that will allow our society to reduce the input of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere while producing energy. This international meeting provided a venue to discuss both technologies and policies between a global community of experts and practitioners.”
Latin America is uniquely positioned to lead in carbon capture, utilization, and storage efforts due to its rich natural resources, growing energy demands, and commitment to sustainable development. The region’s leadership at events like CCUS Latin America 2025 is critical for advancing solutions that balance economic growth with climate goals. This aligns closely with the Battelle Center’s mission to support science and technology that serve the public interest. By engaging with policymakers, industry experts, and researchers in this region, the Battelle Center helps ensure that carbon management strategies are both effective and equitable, contributing to a cleaner energy future worldwide.
Hosted by the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, CCUS Latin America 2025 featured over 160 technical presentations and gathered participants from more than 20 countries. The conference builds on the success of last year’s inaugural Latin America event in Rio de Janeiro and continues to grow in both reach and impact.
The Battelle Center is proud to support conversations that bring together science and policy in service of the public good. Our participation in CCUS Latin America reflects a continued commitment to engaging in complex challenges like carbon management through a multidisciplinary lens.
Special thanks to Jorge Barrios from Battelle and the organizers for including us in this important event. The insights gained and connections made at CCUS Latin America 2025 will help guide our ongoing efforts to advance sustainable energy solutions for the public good.
