Dr. D’Arpino, a research scientist at the Center for Automotive Research at The Ohio State University, joined our Sustainable Energy Student Community to talk about her experience in researching batteries at different sizes and needs for various industries.

Dr. D’Arpino started the session by asking the students what they wanted to talk about during the session. This turned the event into a great opportunity for students to lead the way. The students first asked about her background and how she decided to go into the research field and her experience in industry. Dr. D’Arpino discussed her passion for research and getting the opportunity to learn new things and test new ideas in an atmosphere that allows her to grow.

The next set of questions went to the various types of batteries that are being developed and better understanding the challenges for their application in various industries. The group discussed the challenges of electric cars vs. electric airplanes. They also discussed the battery capacity and uses for sustainable energy storage. The students explored these various industries and the challenges facing them to apply the newest technologies in a fashion that makes sense both logistically and economically. Dr. D’Arpino helped put her role as a researcher in the context of these industries.

This conversation with Dr. D’Arpino was extremely informational and the students continued to be engaged in the conversation until the end. A special thank you to Dr. D’Arpino for making the time to join us and, as always, thank you to our students for continuing the conversation about this important industry.
